After Labor Day Dressing

At SavvyBroad.com, one of the most common questions we get is what are the “rules” for dressing after Labor Day. We are not necessarily into rules, but do like the idea of editing and organizing your wardrobe to keep your look fresh. Therefore, use Labor Day as an opportunity to store away items that look summer therefore enabling you to create a fresh fall look which is hot weather friendly. For example, try a cotton khaki, military green or black sleeveless dress that is accessorized with gold jewelry or a leopard bag. You are still comfortable in 80 plus degree weather but have a cool fall look.

Summer items to store:

  • White, pastel or tropical colored pants, jeans, jackets and skirts.
  • Linens with the exception of highly textured items in fall colors.
  • Florals.
  • Prints in bright colors.
  • Shoes with cork heels and platforms.
  • White, pastel or tropical colored shoes and bags.
  • Accessories that are made from natural materials such as wood, straw, raffia or shells.
  • High shine metallics.
  • Lucite jewelry.

Summer items that go into Fall:

  • Dark, taupe, khaki and military green summer items.
  • Animal print or snake skin accessories.
  • Muted metallics.
  • Beige and winter white.
  • Warm colored shoes and bags like mustard, plum or red.
  • Patent leather.
  • Nautical striped tops in navy or black and white paired with military green.

The Perfect Pant For Your Figure

Accessible New York Style

I have just spent the last few days in New York. This time I decided to skip the high end shopping and just observe the everyday New York women in the hip areas of Soho, Chelsea, etc. What I loved was how they were able to look chic, yet practical regardless of size or age. You see, when you travel by foot you’ve got to make smart choices. Statement necklaces make simple outfits look stylish. Stylish wedges are walkable and a bag doesn’t have to be expensive, but a fresh shape is a must. I think I have some editing to do – how about you?

Luxury and Comfort Can Coexist

It doesn’t get any better than a cozy, figure forgiving chunky sweater. Actually, it does get better – chunky sweaters are one of Fall’s biggest trends. Pair a thigh to 3/4 length soft oversized sweater with everything from a Fall dress to jeans and riding boots. Luxury and comfort can coexist!

Instant Chic: Update Your Pants

With the casual look becoming the norm, your black pant and jean wardrobe has more of an impact on your overall look. If you are like me, you have a “good’ pair of black pants and several “decent” pairs, but they are all “dress” pants. You also went through the painful process of finding the perfect boot cut jean last year or so.   However, in these casual times a varied pant and jean inventory is the key to capturing some of the most fashionable looks. The good news is black pants and jeans are being offered in forgiving fabrics with a wide range of cuts that enhance and incorporate all sizes, shapes and heights.

To expand your options and update your look, you must have a variety of  leg styles. With jeans, add a pair of super straight and trouser cut jeans to your collection. In addition to a great black “dress”pant, i.e. trouser, your black pant collection should include a relatively straight long and lean pant, as well. Also, don’t be afraid to try on jeggings (jean leggings) that stop an inch or so above the ankle to replace your black leggings. They are offered everywhere from New York and Company to Talbots in a broad range of sizes with stretchy fabrics that pull you in. Please note that since jean fabric is heavier, with the appropriate amount of coverage they can be more flattering than leggings!

Finally, pair these pants and jeans with tops and shoes that are modern and create a flattering proportion. Here are some tips:

Straight pant – Hem long and choose a shoe with at least little height, preferably a modern heeled and platformed sandals or booties to lengthen your leg. (There are a variety of heel and platform heights, so find what works for you.)  Pair with a long jacket or a blouse with volume to create balance.

Midrise Jean or Black Trousers – Choose a longer hem also and try pairing with a feminine blouse and belted cardigan.  Remember, you have volume on the bottom, so minimize the amount of volume on top.

Super Straight Pants or Jeggings – Until the temperature drops pair with a long and light drapey sweater or cotton tunic, when it get’s cooler try a full, chunky and long sweater.  Once again, experiment with belting to create waist definition.  Wear flats – think Jackie O – or with the jeggings tucked inside flat boots.

Old Favorites With New Looks

TalbotsChicos

Fantastic news, several figure friendly lines have updated their looks. Finally, real women with real figures and budgets can look really chic. Talbots, Eileen Fisher and Chicos have all hired new creative teams to make their figure friendly brands chic. Sometimes the new look gets watered down in the store, so go to their websites to get a true feel for their new look. Pay particular attention to their leather items, chic sheath dresses, forgiving yet fashionable jeans, sophisticated animal prints and great cardigans – all in a broad range of sizes and cuts.

Savvy Advice: How To Dress For Every Occassion

Savvy Poll

How would you describe your work wardrobe?

Loading ... Loading ...

Usually there is a major disconnect between the runway and a real woman’s closet. However, I must admit Fall 2010 is full of “grown-up” clothes. Of course, we all have to make modifications to make it figure, budget, or age appropriate. But for those of us who remember the 80s and Dynasty this is familiar territory and maybe you can wear a trend the second time around.

Left Brain Meet Right Brain

Right Brain Left BrainAs soon as a child is able to somewhat hold a conversation, he or she is asked what they want to be when they grow up. Early on the choices begin – lawyer or actor, doctor or musician, right brain or left. However the truth is, regardless of our chosen profession, engaging the opposite side of the brain enhances our work product and is the source of potential solutions. The same theory applies to your look and fashion.

If you are a left brain professional, your look must exude a focused confidence. However, adding a great pair of pumps in a chic color, stylish boots, a well-made animal print bag, a tailored leather jacket or statement jewelry stimulates the right side of your brain. If you are a creative right brainer who wants to reinforce the fact that you mean business, do your thing but make sure to “complete” the outfit by including one thing that pulls it all together. This could be a necklace, jacket or color.

Finally, regardless of which side of your brain is most developed, self expression through your dress is fun and empowering.

Thigh High Boots – Really?

Thigh Boots

Yesterday a beautiful and tall friend asked what tips I had for looking even taller. After I asked her if she wanted to be an Avatar, I got serious and made several suggestions, including thigh boots for the Fall. Of course, she thought I had lost my mind and pointed out that she wasn’t a hooker. Fair enough! But as demonstrated below and in the Elena Miro video below, thigh boots can be classy and flattering if you pair them with a knee length skirt or if the flat boot versions are paired with leggings/skinny jeans and a oversized sweater. Savvy Warning: If you are over a certain age or a hooker (you know who you are!) no matter how thin and fit you are, never go without tights/leggings and even then only show a a couple inches of the tight/jean/leggings covered thigh.

Style Transcends Dress Size

I was so excited when I ran across this runway footage. Beautiful clothes on beautiful women who actually look like they eat! The designer is Elena Miro and the clothes are from her Fall/Winter 2010-2011 “softer-size” line for real women. (The jury is still out on whether the term “softer-size” is better than “plus-size”.) Sure, these clothes are expensive and can only be found in Milan or at Harrod’s in London, but the style principles can be recreated on this side of the pond.

Savvy Tips:

  • Monochromatic dressing in beautiful shades is slimming and luxurious.
  • Tall, pointy toe boots in a neutral tone elongates the leg.
  • Strong, bold and sophisticated jewelry adds strength, glamour and balance.
  • Cheap fabrics only work in small amounts, so don’t scrimp!
  • You can wear a belt, just make sure it is wide enough and well made.
  • Beige can be as slimming as black.
  • Beauty comes in all size!!!

The Trench: Utility and Sex Appeal

Trench

It is virtually impossible to look bad in a trench, regardless of your age or size. Something about a trench – double breasted and belted, of course – that makes any woman look sophisticated and put together regardless of what is going on underneath the coat.  They also have sex appeal and utility at the same time – how many things in life does that?!?!  Of course, go classic beige or black and pay attention to the length and fit.  Finally, this piece will be with you forever, so check out the perfect trench – the Burberry. If you can not afford a Burberry, study the cut and details and use that information to find an affordable version.

Savvy Essential: A Short Black Jacket

rockowens

Money is tight and we all need to dig deep in our closets and “make it work”.  However, this task is only possible with those key elements that make the same old thing current.  This fall that item is a short black jacket. When paired with a lady like sheath or pencil skirt, you have fall’s chicest look. Complete the outfit with great pumps and a structured bag.

Handbag Cleaning 101

It’s ironic, we love our bags and will spend good money for them, but most of us give little thought to their care. Whether you change purses often or tote “old faithful” daily, carrying a dirty handbag is never savvy! Keep it clean using the methods below.

  • Read any care instructions that came with the purse.
  • Empty purse and open it as widely as possible and shake out debris.
  • If the lining appears sturdy enough, gently vacuum out the interior to remove every bit of dust and dirt. Don’t forget those dirty zip-up pockets.
  • Dry clean a fabric purse, or spot clean it with warm water and a gentle detergent such as Woolite using a clean, white cloth. Blot – don’t rub – as you go.
  • Use leather cleaner on a leather purse. Use suede cleaner on a suede purse.
  • Wipe a vinyl, plastic or wooden purse with a clean, damp cloth.
  • Take velvet or silk purses to the dry cleaners.

High Heels: Balancing Style With Health

Leather and Leopard and Sweaters – Oh My!!!

It is 100 degrees outside, so why the heck is the Savvy Broad talking about fall fashions? The answer is simple, money. Inevitably the summer sale racks will have a few unexplained winter items that must have gotten lost in the warehouse and are finally on the rack. In addition, the preseason fall sales are in full force.

The following items are investment worthy because you can wear them for a lifetime.

  • Chunky sweaters
  • Leopard accessories
  • Leather jackets and skirts

Finally, A Financial Advantage To Having Kids!

Get some of that tuition money back! Stores like J. Crew are giving discounts on the entire purchase with a student i.d. On a recent shopping trip for one of my sons, I picked up a few great items for myself. These unadvertised discounts are year round and not related to any promotion. Remember, you’ve got to ask about the discount and must show the student i.d.

Savvy and Comfy

HousecoatLife is challenging and after a day of “battle” we all want to get comfortable. Unless you are Gabrielle or Bree from Desperate Housewives your “at home” look looks, well, homeless. After catching my reflection – something I try to avoid when I’m in my “at home” mode – I wondered if I could good achieve the same level of comfort without looking like a hot mess. I figured my self esteem and marriage deserved better!

I cleared out my drawers and made two piles, casual and comfy clothes that I would not be embarrassed to be seen in and faded, ragged and downright unflattering items. I did not realize the amount of cute yoga inspired wear and comfy, plain black dresses I had buried under unflattering t-shirts, shorts and shapeless, faded house dresses. Let’s face it, going braless is sublime, but exercise bras are a comfortable option when you have to be around people and you haven’t gotten that boob job yet.

If you really don’t have any comfy yoga wear or comfy black dresses in your closet, Marshall’s, TJ Maxx and Ross For Less has these items for practically nothing. As you probably guess, black yoga bottoms and loose, solid tops are best. Pair these items with stud earrings and comfy flip flops and you will look and feel both cool and chic.

Surprise benefit? After I threw out my ugly wear, my garment drawers have a lot more space. Ok, I admit, I saved two t-shirts and a pair throw away pants for gardening and painting. But, for those exercises only!

Closet Classics

With a constant barrage of fashion trends and images, it is easy to buy items you don’t need or to give up and wear the same thing over and over. Well, let’s push our reset button and focus on the basics. Click on this link to Net-A-Porter’s style classics webpage. The featured items are quite expensive, but the concepts are not.  It’s about great classic items paired with stylish and chic accessories.

Savvy Sale Shopping

Sale Signs
Sales are everywhere and in bad economic times one has to be more strategic than ever. Below are items that will take you into the fall season. Due to the economy, stores have less inventory. BUT the good news is that they tend to have more of a mix of seasons in their sale inventory. Also, global warming has forced manufacturers to use more temperature neutral clothing, like light weight leathers and sweaters. These items are on sale now and can be worn year round, the key is to pick great colors that transcend the seasons. Finally, a Savvy Broad always has a little flair, so high quality python, leopard and leather items with sophisticated styling are always on the shopping list.

  • Tailored camel colored jacket (Camel is BIG for the fall!)
  • Neutral Pumps (Hey, they elongate the leg and therefore always in style.)
  • Unstructured long cardigans
  • Basic cardigans
  • Leopard shoes and bags
  • Statement jewelry with gold metal base (Big necklaces, bracelets and rings are going to stick around for the fall, so make sure to choose fall friendly colors like black, amber or pearl.)
  • Black structured dresses – ALWAYS!!!!
  • Plaid shirts – Plaid will be big, but unless you are 20 it should be worn sparingly.)
  • Boots – Flat or heeled knee boots and booties are big for another fall and amongst the sale inventory.
  • Embellished flats
  • Cocktail dresses – Get it now, while it’s on sale. You know your going to need it!

How to Wear Flats

Flats2
In a recent SavvyBroad.com poll, we asked readers which items they find the most challenging to wear. A great deal of you expressed frustration with wearing flats. Here are a few tips.

  • Choose current styles in great colors or prints. Avoid black or brown unless they have a trendy twist.
  • Wear the right skirt length. Flats look best when worn with a shorter skirt, about an inch above the knee. Avoid long skirts, they tend to make you look frumpy. Make sure to choose your pants wisely. Try straight-legged or tiny flared cropped pants – the Jackie O look. Also try a hem a few inches above the ankle or right at the top of your foot, depending on your height.
  • Consider low platformed flats or a small, one-inch heel if you are short or pear shaped.

Cool Sleepwear for Hot Women

Between global warming, an internal thermostat and hormones, many women are too hot to get a good night’s sleep. The solution? Haralee.com “wicking” sleepwear and bedding. Wicking sleepwear draws the perspiration away from your skin and quickly evaporates. It’s hard to be savvy when you are sleep deprived, so check out the video below.

Taming Animal Prints

We love animal prints, but they must be approached carefully like the animals they represent. A little goes a long way and too much can make you look like Mrs. Roper from “Three’s Company”. The outfit in the video below might not be for all, but it demonstrates how pairing a neutral and the right jewelry can tame a wild print.

Looking Good At Any Age

SavvyBroad.com is featured this week on ABC’s LiveWell Network. The topic is looking great at any age.

Use It or Lose It

family_graduation

As a women of a certain age, I am knee deep in high school and college graduation ceremonies. Of course, our kids’ commencements are wonderful milestones, but it is also a reminder that we are not getting any younger. So what’s a savvy broad to do? Celebrate your kid, but make sure you also celebrate yourself.

The skill of looking great – yeah, it is a skill – is like any other, if you don’t use it, you will lose it. So use life’s milestones as a time to assess your look and update. Men do it, albeit clumsily, we call it a midlife crisis. Then there is the even more disturbing female version, the “cougar”. The savvy goal is to look fresh, if you achieve freshness you will look younger.

So when you or your family reaches a milestone, go for a makeup consultation, explore a new hairstyle and try a new fashion look that you admire. Time is precious, so don’t wait until you become an empty nester to get your groove back – it might be too late.
